Magazine and audience appeal
Consider what benefit to the reader is the addition of a magazine is to the promotion of a film?
How does a magazine work in trying to convince them that the film is worth seeing. What pleasures does it provide that a film trailer or poster does not
Magazines provide a range of things for the audience , Magazines are written and this could appeal to people who would rather have a written description about the film. expressing a film and how it will appeal to people is done in many different ways.
Magazines are a written mode of text- this appeals to specific members of the audience, who would prefer to read about the film and get information that way however it also work with images which is similar to a poster so they don't miss out on the visual aspects. This is entertaining as reading can be a hobby for some viewers
Physical copies- you can keep magazines and this could appeal to members of the audience as they could collect them , similarly its like people buying CD's instead of purchasing music online.
Information- Magazines provide more information for viewers and readers, they can read about it and learn a lot more than what they can presume from images and what they symbolise. The information could pursued them more than images as it could be reviews. These give brief over views similar to what trailers show but also opinions however these will biased. Where as a trailer is positive biased , a review could be evenly balanced.
opinion- it provides you with more information to help you form a base your opinion of the film after or before you see it.
Appeal of a cover
A cover is a window into an article or review about a film , a cover appeals people to the magazine and what it is about and there are many features that have a large impact.
Colour - colours can symbolise different things and can mean things to the audience. Bright and eye catching colours will draw peoples attention. Bright and contrasting colours which stand out against the back ground make the images and important information stand out.

Colour - colours can symbolise different things and can mean things to the audience. Bright and eye catching colours will draw peoples attention. Bright and contrasting colours which stand out against the back ground make the images and important information stand out.
This empire example is a prime example ,the bright red writing stands out in comparison to the blue background and the black and white writing isn't lost within the blue background . Having the name in red makes it stand out as its one of the first colours the eyes pick up
master head
The master head is a key feature of the page , it starts at the top and reads left to right which is the way in which we view a page and read it in western society. It is also key In the F layout. The master head carries the reputation of the magazine company and it means that it is similar to a brand , you can establish quality and the reputation of company from what is associated from this. Although this is a key part it is usually behind the main image as that is the key selling point however it is likely to be in a bright or contrasting colour to make sure it stands out on the page.
language , semantics and lexis
Word choice has a large impact , emotive langue as well as exclamation on words and phrases show importance and make them stand out , this feature has to be considered. The lexis is used to retain attention and make them want to buy the magazine and read more
for example on the above magazine it says " review of the year " which indicates its brilliance and that it is one of the time other words like " exclusive " seem like important features that shouldn't be missed
photography and the main image
The image is a key and focal point of the cover and is one of the largest features if the image is well taken , eye catching or has a hint of action it can appeal to an audience. It gives them a brief of idea of what to expect and could make them see what else there could be . Main images are a key aspect as well as symbolises and represents the product of production. Its a main point for getting the best marketing out of a magazine cover
mode of address
This can reach an appeal to target audience. When a model/ actress or actor makes eye contact the image could speak to you more. it could create a presence or contact between the image and audience and may make them purchase it . Also the mode of addresses is reflected in the quality of the main image and how good the shot is.

secondary research
Looking for some more research i looked pearl and dean and about audience profile. Through this i have learnt that you have to realise that there is a diverse range of people going to the cinema and viewing films on regular bases.
Other information on secondary research.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER THE TARGET AUDIENCE WHEN MAKING A MEDIA PRODUCT?
Your target audience are who your relying on to make you money and the film a success, many of the active choices your going to make about the film are going to revolve around this group of people as they are the people you need to please with your product. Because of this it you must appeal to them with you product as this is who your targeting and they will make or break the film. This involved production , casting , marketing and more and thats why its such a key part.
HOW DOES IT BENEFIT THE PRODUCTION COMPANY?
Target audience is also important for companies and institutions as it can help them meet a marketing gap and they will also benefit from this making it a good place to find investors. this is reflected in your selling points , your target audience , material and appeal.
I also did a survey looking into reviews of some trailers I've took inspiration from to see what people think of them. Here are the results from it.

Skill development 3
For skill development 3 i have decided to try and make something using after effects, after watching some videos. Through this i have learn about composition and other information. And although not all the videos i have watched.
Here I made a brief production company opening , It isn't very advanced however I made it by my self to prepare for the beginning of the trailer.
Note: the video is 30 seconds long however the animation stops around 6 seconds

film posters purpose and effect
The purpose of film poster and the effect of them
What is the purpose of film posters?
There are two different kinds of film posters and the have similar kinds of purpose but different effects. Posters are an advertising method used to market films. The marketing for the film is determined by how successful the production company as then they will have more money to afford different methods. Posters and trailers are key ways of advertisement. This is there purpose to show and entice an audience to get an Fan base/ group of individuals to pay and watch the film when it comes out to get money.
Teaser and theatrical posters will be made for the same purpose to excite and interest the target audience and any one else possible , this is why secondary and primary research is key in research and has a huge impact on planning.
The purpose is to gain an audience for the film before it is realised after this it is down to reviews and the opinion of the target audience. However before you can construct and image of the film to the people to make them pay and watch it. Teaser posters do this early on In the process the film may not fully be filmed when the poster is realised but it can give people an idea of what actors are in it which could be a major selling point , some information on the film by imagery and symbolism and a date in which the viewers will be waiting for ( hopefully) if the poster has the right effect.
The purpose of a theatrical poster is very similar however it contains more information which could help market to a more select audience, such as film fanatics who are more interested in details like directors and producers as this information is then displayed. On top of this the poster is used to give a sneak peak of the film , it is to make the viewers want more. Want it so much they will pay to go see the film in cinema and even buy a copy of it later.
What is the effect of a poster?
The effect of the poster could have a massive impact. Its a constructed image to interest and entertained potential viewers and it can have a massive impact on there opinion on the film and if there going to invest and go and see it.
Posters could make you want to go and see a film or make you never want to watch it in your life , a posters has to target people on an individual level to have an impact. This can vary between the different kind of audiences however that's why things are made for a target audience.
Here are some features of posters and what there effect and purpose are...
Star list
A start list which can be placed on various places however mainly at the top of the page is like a stamp. This stamp shows off the budget the company have as they can afford better actors ( which could reflect the quality of the film) , the quality of acting and builds a fan base. The purpose of a list of actors is you know what your getting and can evaluate the skill of them. Actors and actresses also have fan bases and these are people who will be interested in the film., Knowing a specific actor is in a film could make you want to watch it. This is the kind of effect star lists will have on the audience.
production of other films
Knowing a producer made a different successful film helps bring an audience in as they would associate the new film with the quality of the other film. This builds the reputation of the new film so people will see that a good film was produced by the same person which will be an indication of how good this film it. Fans of the other film may also want to watch it as there enjoyed the other one. Directors and producers can get good reputations and people may watch the films for them it also helps there careers to be able to show other successful things they have made.
The kind of viewing
this kind of information is practical knowledge and helps viewers know information however it can have a larger impact depending on the option. the purpose is to aware people of what kinds of places and what kinds of screens they can see the film however the effect could be even larger for example , with the rise in technology 3D is popular and if the film poster tells you this it can make the film stand out to some members of the audience, they also charge more however people still pay it as they believe this will enhance the quality of the viewing.
companys
when films have a connection to famous companies it can appeal to there fan base , this is put on the posters for this reason. Companies like Disney , Pixar and marvel have specific audiences who may follow there merchandise, and the productions these are people who will most likely follow anything they create. Putting this on a poster or in trailer tells people what the company is and this will alert the people who are interested in things to do with company about the new film and this then grabs the attention of more people.
All these factors contribute to the overall effect of posters and why we have them.

Poster Testers
To plan for my photo shoot for my poster I took some tester photos that include both of the people I will have acting in my trailer. Here are the tester images and some explanation behind them.
The right character is much more laid back we can tell this from there body langue as there hands lazily are tucked into the trousers. The clothes are also a large indication although this might not be the outfit for the actual poster , it will be a similar style. The lose unbuttoned top and lose jeans to show a lack of bother about looking feminine. The Character on the right on the other hand will be wearing a completely different outfit, as this one the colours are to dark. Her body langue is meant to show an attitude while also covering her front with her arm as a symbol of trying to protect her self and close her self off from what's happening within the movie world. The way that there practically shoulder to shoulder is meant to show there connection as best friends and how close they are. There facial expressions haven't fully been decided, however I may have them both smiling similar to the photo or have them having opposite facial expressions to represent the good and the bad of the story and how not everything is one sided. It would be to show the complexity of life and what people of there age go through. The characters both look fairly young which matches the fact the film would be a coming of age drama. I took the photos with a plain background in case I wanted to change it however I have some ideas for backgrounds.
When planning ideas for the poster I thought about this kind of photo but in action it didn't match my expectations. It was difficult to show a connection and make it captivating. I had both the characters looking at each other to show the friendship along with the platonic hand holding however this could imply some romance which isn't the case between the two characters. The fact that the character on the left is the protagonist is shown by the fact they are facing the front and we see the other characters back shows which character is more important. The fact the right character has her back to the camera could suggest she is more secretive or has more to hide where as the main character is more open but also shows that could be why she gets hurt more easily, which could represent the feeling portrayed though out the trailer and movie.
The follow two pictures match as they are meant to be the same kind of photo however there are slight differences. The character on the left is holding an object in the tester it is a jacket as of limited props however in the actual one it may be something like a fluffy pillow , this is meant to be a shield and how she holds things close to her like she wears her heart on her sleeve, where as the rolled up sleeves of the left character are used to show her bareness to the world and how she holds nothing on her sleeves. The second image where the left character has here fists balled is used to show her protective side , her more brash nature and her more Boysish style and life. The way she's laying down is more relaxed and laid back , where as the character on the right is sat up to show her paying attention or to highlight she's trying to keep her head up. The images are the same other than some minor details plus the way they are taken as of the dimensions of a poster the top one would be better. However I took both to represent what the minor changes could make for the image. Both character would be looking at the camera however the protagonist is always on the left with works with the fact that people look left to right.
This idea came to mind during the shoot to highlight the connection and how close they are, it also could represent the fact that the character on the left is trying to ground the character on the right or it could be a secret message that the character on the right is holding up the character on the left. If done correctly it could also match the Triangle layout of posters having there faces and facial expressions at the top.
if I used this one I would have it so the character on the back wouldn't be making eye contact with the camera to show the main character and how they are the most important. It could also be used to show the characters Maturity levels. The character on the bottom is more mature and isn't messing around this could be because they have gone through a lot or its there personality. Mean while the other character is still growing up and may learn through out the film or be an instigator in childish activity.
This one seemed like a good idea however the majority of the main image is boring as it is a plain back which takes up most of the frame , this could work depending on clothes choice such as having a jacket with righting or a hoodie that says class of 17 or something to signify something. The hug resembles a connection and also the friendship and the fact the main character is the face we can see also shows that off , it would be better if the main character was looking at the camera. I like the idea however it would need developing to be an effective poster , with the right costume choices it could work quite well however I will need to think about what I have access to. I may try the hug idea in different ways as it shows a closeness
The last image links to the hug as its a half a hug photo , the pair are clos however both have open body langue and are facing the camera to show there attitdues. In the actual shoot I would have the main character on the left, But I would keep the fact the other character has her arm over her shoulder which is a big indication that she's supporting her friend instead of the other way round . In this photo we can clearly scene clothes choices and what message they would bright across to the audience. I like this idea as one of my favourites however it would need to be pre planned a little more if I was going to use it. However the characters fit the personality of the actual people quite well so the easily bring the image across to the photo shoots.
I haven't fully decided which one I will use for the poster however I have thought about which ones are the best representation there is a choice between three of them in my opinion.

Magzine ideas
Here are some of the basic ideas for the magazine I am going to have to make.
Bellow are some examples of what I came up with for the master head, however to make them better I will edit them on photoshop
.
- colour scheme- This will have to appeal to the target audience but it will also have to work with the magazines themes and masthead. I have decided to go for light " girly " colours to add to the effect of it being a drama with romance as this will fit to the target audience this could also include pinks , purples , blues and reds which would all work with a range of basic colours like black and white
- Masthead- I have came up with some names for the magazine such as Big Screen , Box office, Close up and Film Extra, silver screen
- using Dafont I have came up with some ideas for this part of the magazine.
- Image- I will do a photo shoot with the main characters of the film.
- I will do some research into upcoming film or entertainment news to make it relevant to the dates.
Bellow are some examples of what I came up with for the master head, however to make them better I will edit them on photoshop
.
After some research I have decided that I will call the magazine Film extra. I have used photo shop to come up with some potential title for the magazine.
Here are two of my options for the magazine name.
for the magazine and the poster I am going to have to have a colour scheme. This has to work well with the masthead and other features. Having the masthead in black or white can benefit as it could work well with potential colour schemes. I am going to keep the colour scheme the same as it helps with synergy.
At the current moment I am thinking about the lay out and the design so the colour scheme is a key part in my product. because of this I have done some practice photo-shoot's ( photos for poster and magazine) and I have researched colour schemes and meanings.
How i plan to do my filming
Here is a written plan for how i plan on filming things , this includes What type of shot and how it will be achieved. The post will also contain information on how many seconds each shot will be ( this will correlate with the story board).
I plan to do my filming through the months of June July august, September and October. All of shoots will be within this time and will meet the needs of the actors / characters.
Equipment
For filming i plan on using an Cannon Camera and a tripod as well as a mic.
I am making a shooting scheduled for both of the people , maria and Nikita , this will include time and location of filming. So it can done in an organised fashion and i can manage my time well.

skill developement 2
For skills development 2 i have decided to watch some tutorials on after effects to learn the basics and try and make something to get used to the tools available.
To start i will be looking at the basics first as i haven't used it before. After that i may look at some more advanced videos on typography , motion graphics and more. This will help me for when i make part of the trailer
To practice my skill i will try and learn how to different effects.
I will do this by watching some YouTube videos plus getting some tips and basics.

conventions of movie posters
EXTRA
Another part of posters I have looked at is the small section at the bottom, This is usually a section which includes the principle cast and crew. A majority of this is legal and copyright information which is made small as not many people bother to read it. Including this in the magazine may make it seem more professional. I may include it if the photography works with it. The font I would use is on Microsoft word and is called agency FB

audiences
The film industry studies real audiences to gather information , they do this through methods such as surveys, focus groups and interviews. This is done because the industry needs as many viewers as possible to make a profit. This investigation is done through research and marketing. There are a range of ways to researching the measure of response
Box office takings , views , website hits, followers and shares on social media , ratings and subscriptions
What can audience be defined by.... GEARS
Box office takings , views , website hits, followers and shares on social media , ratings and subscriptions
What can audience be defined by.... GEARS
- gender
- ethnicity
- age
- region,
- social-economic group
The traditional segmentation model
Maslows hierarchy of needs
This is a motivational theory in psychology which shows a five tier model of human needs. This involves media as these Needs can help for a base of a target audience and what the people need , such as what is in the pyramid .
Psychometric
Demographics like GEARS doesnt always work as not everyone fits in the traditional categories. Another way is a Pschometric audience profile as this reflects on how they think, attitudes and morals.

Audience appeal
once a target audience is selected they use methods to appeal to the group such as....
Technical and audio codes
example - Fast editing and fast pace music would be used for an action film , plus the trailer may be shown in a cinema before a film of a simialr genre so the a simialr target audience is there to view it.example - seeing trailers for super hero movies while seeing a super hero movie
Language
There may be terms all similar to a topic or genre ( semantic filed in written media as there would be subject specific lexis ), In a trailer an action film may have language around violence and weapons maybe even taboo to appeal to the age of the audience and make it realistic
Mode of address
construction
Trailers can use a range of things such as key selling points like star actors, enigma codes , multi- stranded narrative to attract and appeal the the audience
Context
As said before playing a trailer for a film before the film of a similar genre would work well as they have a similar target audience.
-
Stereotypes
This can have a large impact on the target audience and the appeal however you need to consider that this is just an assumption. It is good not to revert to stereotypes.

Stuart Hall
Stuart hall is a cultral Theorists who looked into media texts and claimed that audiences where active or passive.
Passive- is less likely to challenge the message and will more likely be effected by the message.
Active- they engage and interpret things, this means they challenge the ideas encoded into it.
He also suggest there are three main responses to a media text from an audience.
- Preferred reading - when they respond how a creator/ producers wants them to
- negotiated reading - accepting and rejecting elements
- oppositional reading- understands the prefered reading but opposes it
Gratification theory
These theory's suggest there are certain reasons why audiences respond to different media texts
- entertainment and diversion- to escape from there everyday lives, these kinds of texts let them distance them self from the world
- information and education - want to learn and now more and they help the audience learn and find out whats happening around the world
- social interaction - get in the mix when action is happening
- personal identity- can compare there own life
classifying an audience
Tribe wired
Fun/atics
Dynamic Duos
priority parents
Home soldiers
renaissance woman
struggling singles
settled elders
free birds
Your target audience will be at all different stages in life however you can use the family life cycle as a way to target an audience if you distinguish what stage of the life cycle your audience is in then it can help you decide how your going to reach them.
Here is the life cyle
Dependent - child living at home
bachelor- not living at home , few financial burdens
pre-family - young couples settling
full- nesters couple with children
empty nester- children have left home
grey market- over 50's
solitary survivor - medical and product needs as other retired groups.

Film poster positioning and sizes
There are many ways to advertise a film such as posters and trailers ( the main focus will be posters). In this blog I am going to explore the different positioning's of poster and the layout and sizes, along with other methods over advertising.
Billboard
Billboards are large and catch peoples attention because of there massive size compared to other. Having a simplistic design would help as if people where on the move they would be able to get the information with out getting distracted where as if it is cluttered people wont be able to take in the key information.
Billboards could be on the side of the road or on the side of buildings. There are many buildings in busy city's such as London which are used for advertising some even have moving images and pictures and could play the trailers instead of having posters.
The size and location of A billboard could also show how high the budget of a film , as the bigger and better it is the more expensive it would be.
.
However some times these aren't maintained and the weather my affect the poster stopping people from getting all the information.
This may be hard to target a specific audience as its in a place where so many people will see it however that doesn't me the target audience are guaranteed.
As mentioned earlier they cost a lot so only company's with high budgets can afford them in addition other methods off advertisement are around longer.
Bus stop
Bus stops are good as they easily target one kind of audience , as you can predict who will see it, people who use public transport. people going by in cars and walking can also see it as it will be in a public place. Bus usually supply transport for busy areas such as towns and city's so this may mean more people will be able toe see it
However passers by may be in a rush or may just ignore the poster, people on buses may not pay that much attention as they are only on buses for a short amount of time , they also may be paying more attention to where they are and when they have to get off.
cinema
Cinemas are a good place for posters as film fan will be there , these are the kinds of people who would be interested in new upcoming films. There is also likely to be of a film of a similar genre so this would have a similar target audience. Match the environment of the location.
The posters could have direct links to the trailers being played in the cinema, these trailers can be played for films with similar or different genres reaching a wider audience, on top of this these trailers cant be skipped and people have to sit through them. On top of that some people may enjoy seeing the trailers for other films if it is an interest of there , this is also reflected in the fact they would pay to watch the film as its newly released so these are the people your trying to get to watch your film.
However trailers before films can irritate people and they may leave to buy food or go on there phone until the movie they actually wants to see starts. As all the people at the cinema already have an interest in a film they may not pay attention to posters and trailers and may over look them. Lots of competition and if the posters and trailers don't stand out they may be forgotten. It may cost quite a bit to do this.
Magazine
Magazines are published all over the country and can reach a wide range of people , they impact people within the written media industry. Picking a magazine that would address your target audience would benefit the advertisement as there are so many different magazines. Some magazines are online which could reach a larger target audience. People some times collect magazines and are less likely to throw them away so they remember them for longer which means that they will remember the film, for when it released or when the DVD is available to buy.
However There will always be a more popular magazine and if you wanted your poster in this then it would have a larger cost. Adds in all kinds of magazines can be over looked if the stories and articles are more interesting. The timing between the film release has to match the time line the magazine has to be created for it to have the right effect
poster sizes
This is a One sheet portrait poster which are standard posters usually by the size of around 686 x 1020mm = 27 bt 40 inches . There are many examples of film posters in this size however there are other sizes for film posters.
.
t-sides
This kind of poster is when a film or product is advertised on the side of a bus , there are many bus services which all travel to different places making it an effective way to reach a wide audience. The picture shows a stagecoach bus which is a way off travel though England meaning it reaches this kind of audience. It is known as A t-side because of the shape it takes on the buss with a landscape band across the most part and then it dips down , the dimensions of this poster is 3ft by 10ft
quad film posters
Quad film posters are landscape , there dimensions are 762 x 1020mm = 30 by 40 inches
Teaser Vs Theatrical poster
Posters are used as a promotion and marketing method, that includes the different kinds such as teaser and Theatrical poster.
This is a teaser poster for the 2017 remake of the Disney classic Beauty and the beast, It features the Disney logo above the title in a gold which could represent that it is a film about a princes, so could the style and the font of the title. The fact it says Disney attracts a similar audience to there other films,( adults who have grown up watching Disney and young kids at the current moment ) The teaser doesn't give away the actors or actresses and it doesn't have an exact realise date. The Teaser poster doesn't contain a person only a rose as a symbol( Fans will know the meaning or if they have scene the previous films). This poster doesn't show it but some also give away the director of the film to bring up the films reputation. The main image is a mix of cool blues and whites so that it makes the green and red of the flower stand out. The white also suggests that it is winter or cold that would kill the flower which implies the case is protecting it. The teaser only gives you this small image to make assumptions from and doesn't give away a lot about the film, the rose is the symbol used in this poster. These unanswered questions about the rose and why it needs protecting along with who is the beauty and who is the beast isn't answered, making the viewers want to watch the film and find out more
Theatrical poster
This is the theatrical poster for the same film. It clearly follows more of the conventions of typical poster. The film now has More information presented along the top and the bottom of the poster ( these are here so they don't take away attention from the main image). The title is kept the same and consistent. However now we see The actors. The beauty is clearly the woman in the yellow dress which could symbolise royalty and riches from the bright eye catching colour mixed with the golden bright background. This colour scheme works well with presenting them as royalty and the importance of these two characters. The woman in the dress also address the star appeal as it is a famous actress Emma Watson. The beast contrasts the colours she's wearing to show the difference but they are a royal blue which also highlight his importance in the film. The beast is looking down on the princess ( which use assume from here costume ) this suggests that he is more powerful or it could mean he is more dangerous. There eye contact( as neither are them are looking at each other but are looking into each other eyes ) and body langue suggest romance/ attraction which gives away some of the plot and also the genre of the film. This Poster would be realised closer to the realise date as you can see at the bottom of the poster it now has the exact date , this means people can see the poster and they will remember it and be able to prepare to go and see it on this release day. The information above provides key information about the production and other key things which may influence or convince someone to see the movie.
It also provides the information about what cinemas you can go see it , which means people who want to see it can take all the information from this poster so that they can see the poster and then know everything they need. The poster also tells them about the fact if it can be scene in 3D in IMAX. Meaning it is effective at informing the audience.
Posters use a mix of mise-en scene and editing to construct a simple yet striking part of the film universe to bring it to life for the audience.
The time of realise will be different for the different poster , a teaser trailer will be realised early in production stage, to gain attention and for people to become interested where as the theatrical poster will be realised closer to the time and will contain more information so that the viewers will know what they are to expect in the up coming time of the film.
Many films will have a number of different poster , below is an example of dead pool's teaser and theatrical posters as an example.
- Teaser posters-
- promotions for a film
- used to make a sense of mystery and intrigue audience
- gives limited information away
- Show and image or symbol to represent the film.
- May include information like coming soon or the realise date to the film but other than this it keep the information limited
- It is used to spike interest
- Theatrical poster
- The posters will contain more information, this could be the directors to the films stars
- it will usually follow the typical conventions
- The poster may give more away
- More writing will be on the poster

magazine inspration
Although this one is a TV show
Through research I have found films with a similar genre to my own have been on the cover of entertainment magazines instead off an al round film magazine. However that could make it stand out with in the film magazine market and may benefit the company. I'm going to have to consider which will be the best promotional method.
I'm also having to take in
consideration how it will be represented , will it be the characters of the film or will it be a mix of the actors together but it could be perceived as the actors instead of the characters.
Magazine
Entertainment magazines are used to help advertise and promote upcoming films , because of this its a good part form to advertise. Above is some examples from three popular movie magazines.
- Best movie
- TOTAL FILM
- Empire
